The widespread perception of southern California as a verdant paradise was central to the attraction of thousands of newcomers to the state, especially those seeking a better life during the Great Depression. From 1939 to 1941, some of the best-known novels dealing with the rise-and fall--of the California dream were published: John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (1939), Nathanael West's The Day of the Locust (1939), Aldous Huxley's After Many a Summer Dies the Swan (1939), Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep (1939) and Farewell, My Lovely (1940), and F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Last Tycoon (1941).
